Fifteen Cents on the Dollar: A Conversation with Ebony Reed and Louise Story

“America, and Americans, made the Black-white wealth gap,” write Story and Reed. “And our society continues to hold it in place.” Signs of incremental progress have been hollow victories against generations-old systemic injustice. FIFTEEN CENTS ON THE DOLLAR provides crucial insight into American economic equity, Black business ownership, and political and business practices that leave Black Americans behind. In chronicling these staggering injustices, it also reveals the keys to lasting change.

An Evening with Brea Baker, ROOTED: THE AMERICAN LEGACY OF LAND THEFT AND THE MODERN MOVEMENT FOR BLACK LAND OWNERSHIP

“Research suggests that between 1910 and 1997, Black Americans lost about 90% of their farmland.” The first book by acclaimed writer, political strategist, and national organizer Brea Baker, Rooted is a quick-paced and engagingly lucid primer on the physical histories and land legacies of Black people in the United States, interwoven with Baker’s own vivid family history of devastating land loss in Kentucky and North Carolina. Baker has examined records and historical accounts from all over the country to illustrate how the concerted effort to push Black Americans off of the land has resulted in the contemporary racial wealth gap. In chapters like “So Much for 40 Acres and a Mule,” “What Doesn’t Kill You,” and “The Land Wants Us Back,” she presents a powerful history of the impact of land theft and violent displacement in the U.S., arguing that justice and reparations will stem from its literal roots. Keisha N. Blain, co-editor of the #1 New York Times bestseller Four Hundred Souls, says, “Brea Baker’s Rooted is a moving, insightful, and intimate account of the history of Black land ownership and land theft in the United States. It is a must-read for anyone interested in advancing racial justice and equity.”

About Brea Baker:

She believes deeply in nuanced storytelling and Black culture to drive change, and has commented on race, gender, and sexuality for Elle, Harper’s BAZAAR, Refinery29, THEM, and more. Negotiating While Black: A Conversation with Damali Peterman

There’s no shortage of negotiation books that advise you to “get to yes,” urge you to “never split the difference,” and push you to “ask for more.” But these one-size-fits-all negotiation techniques disregard the reality of our complex, multifaceted, multicultural world, where snap judgements are made based on perceived differences. When bias lies behind every negotiation, the only constant is you.

Pretty: A Conversation with KB Brookins

In PRETTY, Brookins portrays:

  • An honest Texan experience—the book details to an acerbic degree the political and cultural landscape of multiple Texas cities, and what there is, still, to love about the Lone Star state

  • The state of transgender rights—Brookins shares experiences of accessing medical care as a trans person, and the impact of anti-trans policies that are being advanced all across the U.S.

  • Growing up in the church—Brookins writes about religion, and how growing up in a religious household shaped their view of spirituality today

  • Black trans joy—the memoir contains many moments of humor and happiness, which often exist alongside or despite moments of great strife

  • How to love one's body—Brookins describes their experience of "top surgery" and loving their body despite it being the thing that boxes them, to some, into a certain gender
